Spring 2012 Field Trips: March 25th, 2012 Cedar Creek NOTE: MEETING TIME IS 1:15 P.M. Take Rt 119 South to I-70 West. Exit I-70 at Rt 51 North, toward Elizabeth. Bear Right at the first traffic light located almost immediately after you leave the exit ramp. There is a BP Gas Station, a Burger King, and a chiropractor's parking lot at 1:15 P.M. (This is where we have met before, however the traffic signal was since added and the businesses have changed.) April 15th, 2012 at 1:30pm Ann Rudd Saxman Nature Park Meet at Donohoe Center at 1:30pm. The park is located behind the Donohoe Center. April 29, 2012 at 1:30pm Otto and Magdalena Ackerman Nature Preserve Take Rt. 30 West from Greensburg. Go 5 miles past the turnpike entrance in Irwin. At the light in front of Sheetz, make a right and turn onto Leger Road. Bearing Left each time the road divides, go a little less than 2 miles to the bottom of a large hill. Do not cross the bridge, but bear left and go 0.2 miles up the hill. The Nature Preserve is on the Left between the two houses. The Entrance is marked with a sign. Meet there at 1:30pm. May 6th, 2012 at 1:30pm Braddock's Trail From Greensburg Walmart travel west on Rt.30 approximately 7.5 miles to the signal at Hamilton Buick (at top of Jacktown Hill.) Turn Left onto Robbins Station Road. Go up the hill, keep Left past the Circleville U.M. Church. At the first "Y" in the road bear Left. Proceed to the "T" in the road, turn Right, continue on the winding road keeping to the Left at the "Y" and proceed to the dirt parking lot at the end of the road. This is about two and a half or only (2.5) miles from the Hamilton Buick at 1:30pm. ----- May 20th, 2012 at 1:30pm Twin Lakes Park Take Rt 30 East to Westmoreland Mall. Turn Left immediately after you go under the mall bridge. After the turn go about 300 feet and then bear right onto Donohoe Road. Follow this through one traffic light and two stop signs. Shortly after passing the second stop sign make a left towards Twin Lakes Park, and park at the first lot on the left at 1:30 P.M. ---- JUNE 10TH 2012 AT 1:30 P.M. BOTANICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL PICNIC at Winnie Palmer Reserve, Latrobe Pennsylvania 15650 Please bring a covered dish to share*. (Please also bring your own flatware, napkins and dishes) Drinks will be provided. Eating is promptly at 2:00 P.M. Walking is available after eating. Turn Left at Sign for Westinghouse Specialty Metals Plant. Follow Westinghouse Road all the way and pass the plant (about 1.7 miles). Immediately past the plant continue straight (Note: Ignore West Penn Trail turn sign) and cross the Railroad Tracks to the trailhead parking area beyond. "Braddock's Trail" From Greensburg Walmart Travel West on Rt 30 Approximately 7.5 miles to the signal at Hamilton Buick (at top of Jack Town Hill). Turn Left onto Robbins Station Road. "Westmoreland Heritage Trail" (Slickville) Take Rt.819 North from Greensburg to Slickville. In Slickville, turn Right onto Main Street (just past church). Go several blocks and bear Right onto County Road. Go Approximately 1.5 Mile (one and a half mile) to Maple Lodge Road, Turn Right and trailhead parking is on Right. "Duff Park, Murrysville" North on Old Rt 66 to Rt 22 West. Continue West Approximately 5 Miles to Murrysville. Look for Sheetz on Left and then turn Left onto School Road South. Meet at the Parking Lot that is on the Right Side of the Road about1/10th or .1 mi(One Tenth of) of One mile from Rt 22. by 1:30 p.m. 2010 and 2011 Botanical Society Picnic and Field Trip An Outdoor Picnic and a Day of Field Study was across rugged PA Native terrain at the Home of Pia Van de Venne4040 Round Top Road, Murrysville From Greensburg: take Rt 66 North then Rt 22 West. In Murrysville, at the Light by McDonald's (which is on the right) turn Left onto Trafford Road. Cross over the bridge and railroad tracks, then bear left onto Pleasant Valley Road, then left again onto Round Top Road. Van de Venne's is the first house on the left, about 1/2 mile up this road. There is parking near the barn that is along the side of the driveway.
