FIELD TRIPS
Field Trips are customarily held on specified Sundays at 1:30 p.m.
Directions may be posted prior to the field trip
and are detailed from the Greensburg, Pennsylvania 15601 Area
unless stated herein, via email, or monthly meeting.

Historically members carpool or follow the vehicle with the scarf tied to it's antenna adventurously
in some rain or shine, unless a Springtime snow we often meet at destination.

April 7th 2013: South Greensburg
Community Park
South Greensburg Community Park Directions:
From the Intersection of Rt. 30 and Rt. 119 go South on Rt 119 about 1/2 mile to the traffic light at the Huff Avenue
Intersection. (This is just past Hoss' Restaurant) Turn Left at the Light.
Stay on Huff Avenue which ends at the park.

May 5th, 2013:  Upper Latrobe
AMD Treatment Project
Take Route 981 North toward Latrobe.  At the first traffic light at the BP Gas Station make a Right and then an
immediate Left onto Lloyd Avenue Extension.  Continue on this road until just before Gentle Touch Car Wash (on the left)
and make the Right onto Center Drive.  At the  giant green pole on the left, Make a Left through the industrial complex.
(This is Dill Lane on Google Maps).  
(Meet at the gate on the left (not directly at the end of the driveway).

May 19, 2013: Seton Hill University
From Toll 66 Interchange take Rt. 30 East.  Take the Pittsburgh Street Exit into Greensburg.  At the 5th Traffic Light
Turn Left onto Bell Way.  Go 1 block to the next traffic light and continue straight onto College Avenue and through the
tunnel.  The university's entrance is on the left.  Park in the large lot past the back of the library/Harlan Gallery.

At Stickney's Food Plots
144 Stifler Rd., Bolivar  PA 15923
Take Route 711 North from Ligonier 9.5 miles.  Turn Left onto Midget Camp Rd.  Go 1.1 miles on Midget Camp.  Turn
Left onto Tantlinger Hollow Rd. and go 0.3 mile.  Turn Right onto Stiffler Rd. and go 0.2 mile to the top of a small
hill.  Stickneys' Food Plots is on the Right; watch for the American flags.  
Look for 144 on the fence.  Pass through the double gate on unpaved two-track path (across the end of the hayfield).  
The gate entrance will have QDMA signage.  Drive 900 feet to the wooden pole building (not visible from the road).  
Parking will be marked in the hayfield near the fenced garden area.  
Met at Stickney's destination at 1:00 p.m.

Report of the 2013  Picnic
June 2nd, 2013 at 1:30 p.m.
Members Annual Covered Dish Picnic
This year the Annual Picnic of The Botanical Society of Westmoreland County was delightfully held
at the
National Historic Bushy Run Battlefield Pavilion and
included the retirement of Paula Korber as President (see a beautiful member photo on the Internet and
featured on Facebook pages).
Directions to Bushy Run were from Greensburg PA: Take Business Route 66 North to Route 993 (on Left).  Bushy Run
Battlefield is Approximately 3 miles on Route 993.  Turn Right and Park next to the Pavilion.

September 9th, 2012 Pleasant Valley Park
Pleasant Valley Park is 35 minutes from Greensburg taking Rt 66 North then Rt 22 West.
In Murrysville, at the ldeight by McDonald's (which is on the Right) turn Left onto Trafford Road. Cross over the bridge
and railroad tracks, then bear Left onto Pleasant Valley Road. Stay on this road for 1.2 miles.  Look for a gold,
diamond-shaped entrance sign on the Right side of the road.
The road is lined on both sides with a split rail fence. Turn Left and drive uphill into the parking lot.

September 23rd, 2012 Otto and Magdalena Ackerman Nature Reserve
***Ledger Road to Ackerman Reserve is closed***
Continue West on US route 30 past the Sheetz.  
Pass the Penn Lincoln Memorial Park/ Cemetery on your Right
and be in the Right lane.  Turn Right onto Ardara Road.
At the stop sign, turn Right to continue onto Ardara Rd. Travel Ardara road a little over a mile to the Reserve parking,
which will be on the Right.

October 7th, 2012 Third Bridge Wetlands
(Formerly Braddock's Trail)
Greensburg Walmart travel West on Rt. 30 approximately 7.5 miles to the signal at Hamilton Buick (at top of Jacktown
Hill.)  Turn Left onto Robbins Station Road.  Go up the hill, keep Left past the Circleville U.M. Church.  At the first "Y"
in the road bear Left.  Proceed to the "T" in the road, turn Right, continue on the winding road keeping to the Left at "Y"
and proceed to the dirt parking lot at the end of the road.  This is about 2.5 miles from Hamilton Buick
(Hamilton Buick now is called Kenny Ross and address for the car dealership is: 11310 Center Hwy, North Huntingdon, PA
15642-2002

October 21st, 2012 Monastery Run
Take Rt 30 East to Rt. 981.  Turn Left at light by Arnold Palmer Airport.  Follow Rt. 981 to first light
(at BP Gas Station).  Turn Left at light.  Go a little over a half of a mile to the Gristmill where we will
meet at 1:30 p.m.
Note from Pres. Paula Korber regarding weather:
"Please let me know if you are planning to attend. I plan to go...weather permitting. In case it is very nasty
weather, please feel free to call my home...after 11:30 a.m."

March 25th, 2012
Cedar Creek
NOTE: MEETING TIME IS 1:15 P.M.
Take Rt 119 South to I-70 West.  Exit I-70 at Rt 51 North, toward Elizabeth.  Bear Right at the first
traffic light located almost immediately after you leave the exit ramp.  
There is a BP Gas Station, a Burger King, and a chiropractor's parking lot at 1:15 P.M.
(This is where we have met before, however the traffic signal was since added and the businesses have
changed.)

April 15th, 2012 at 1:30pm
Ann Rudd Saxman Nature Park
Meet at Donohoe Center at 1:30pm.
The park is located behind the Donohoe Center.

April 29, 2012 at 1:30pm
Otto and Magdalena Ackerman Nature Preserve
Take Rt. 30 West from Greensburg. Go 5 miles past the turnpike entrance in Irwin. At the light in front of
Sheetz, make a right and turn onto Leger Road. Bearing Left each time the road divides, go a little less
than 2 miles to the bottom of a large hill. Do not cross the bridge, but bear left and go 0.2 miles up the
hill. The Nature Preserve is on the Left between the two houses. The Entrance is marked with a sign.
Meet there at 1:30pm.
*note Construction in 2012 see above if Ledger Road Closures

May 6th, 2012 at 1:30pm
Braddock's Trail
From Greensburg Walmart travel west on Rt.30 approximately 7.5 miles to the signal at Hamilton Buick
(at top of Jacktown Hill.) Turn Left onto Robbins Station Road.

Twin Lakes Park
Take Rt 30 East to Westmoreland Mall. Turn Left immediately after you go under the mall bridge.
After the turn go about 300 feet and then bear right onto Donohoe Road. Follow this through one
traffic light and two stop signs. Shortly after passing the second stop sign make a left towards Twin
Lakes Park, and park at the first lot on the left at 1:30 P.M.

Some Past 2011 Field Trips:
"WEST PENN TRAIL (EAST END)"  From Rt 981 and Rt. 22 crossroads, travel East on Rt 22
Approximately 5 Miles.
Turn Left at Sign for Westinghouse Specialty Metals Plant.  
Follow Westinghouse Road all the way and pass the plant (about 1.7 miles).  Immediately past the plant
continue straight (Note: Ignore West Penn Trail turn sign) and cross the Railroad Tracks to the trailhead
parking area beyond.

"Braddock's Trail" From Greensburg Walmart Travel West on Rt 30 Approximately 7.5 miles to the
signal at Hamilton Buick (at top of Jack Town Hill).  Turn Left onto Robbins Station Road.  Go up
the hill, keep left past the

"Westmoreland Heritage Trail"  (Slickville)  Take Rt.819 North from Greensburg to Slickville.  In
Slickville, turn Right onto Main Street (just past church).  Go several blocks and bear Right onto County
Road.  Go Approximately 1.5 Mile (one and a half mile) to Maple Lodge Road,
Turn Right and trailhead parking is on Right.

"Duff Park, Murrysville" North on Old Rt 66 to Rt 22 West. Continue West Approximately 5 Miles to
Murrysville.  Look for Sheetz on Left and then turn Left onto School Road South.  Meet at the
Parking Lot that is on the Right Side of the Road about1/10th or .1 mi(One Tenth of) of One mile
from Rt 22. by 1:30 p.m.

2010 and 2011 Botanical Society Picnic and Field Trip
An Outdoor Picnic and a Day of Field Study was across rugged PA Native terrain
at the Home of Pia Van de Venne4040 Round Top Road, Murrysville
From Greensburg: take Rt 66 North then Rt 22 West.  
In Murrysville, at the Light by McDonald's (which is on the right)
turn Left onto Trafford Road. Cross over the bridge and railroad tracks, then bear left onto Pleasant
Valley Road, then left again onto Round Top Road.
Van de Venne's is the first house on the left, about 1/2 mile up this road.  
There is parking near the barn that is along the side of the driveway.
Please bring a covered dish to share (and wear hiking attire).
